The Story: Last year, this person stated exactly what the title says in his first sentence. He then told me that I was one of three people chosen by the IRS to receive a grant for $5000 because I was a faithful tax payer.
After questioning him about this because I was under the impression that Grants had to be applied for he asked for my account information and routing number so that they could deposit the money. I continued to question him about the Grant and he gave me the official website for grants: www.grants.gov. While I was typing in the website URL, I gave him the my information he said that they would withdraw $65.00 for a charity that they represent and that it would not really come out of my money but out of the grant money that would be deposited by noon the next day. I figured that I had nothing to lose so I said OK. Just after I hung up I found a link on the grants.gov website for a newsflash about this scam but I did not see it until after I had hung up. Of course I never got the grant and I had to go down to my bank and file for a stop of payment of funds and had to change my ATM information.
I just checked on the grants.gov website and the link has been removed but it may be under the "news" section on that site. This company continued calling me for 4 months. It was if they never had any information of the previous calls and my angry responses including threatening to call the News 5 on your side people so that everyone with in their viewing would become aware of this fraud and the Attorny Generals office. They finally stopped calling.
