In an effort to get the truth behind the assertions of those who assert that the
Do Not Call Registry has had a significant impact, I submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the FTC, asking for information as to the total number of numbers registered, total number of complaints and total number of enforcement actions. Although I was not provided with all the data that I requested (with no explanation as to the missing information), the information was quite illuminating. I shall be providing more data in the coming days, but the short story is that out of 2,884,474 registered complaints, the FTC and the Justice Department has brought only 25 cases. Even considering that some of these almost 3 million were either not applicable (e.g. political/charity calls) or were multiple complaints against the same entity, only 25 actions? Deplorable...
